A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan is private insurance that helps pay for what Original Medicare doesn't cover. Unlike Medicare Advantage, Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare — you keep your Part A and Part B, and the Supplement fills in the gaps.
The result? More predictable costs, fewer surprise medical bills, and the freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare nationwide.
Replaces Original Medicare. Often includes drug coverage and extras like dental/vision. Uses network doctors (HMO/PPO). Lower monthly premiums but copays at point of care.
Works alongside Original Medicare. Covers out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance. See any doctor who accepts Medicare, anywhere in the U.S. Higher monthly premiums but little to no cost at point of care.
Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government — Plan G from one carrier covers the same things as Plan G from another. The difference is price, company reputation, and rate stability.
Lower premium. Small copays for some office visits and ER trips. Great for healthy people who want to save monthly.
Covers everything except the Part B deductible. Most popular plan nationwide. Predictable costs with almost zero out-of-pocket surprises.
High-deductible version of Plan G. Lowest monthly premium. You pay a deductible first, then the plan covers 100%.
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this 6-month window, insurance companies must sell you any Medigap plan they offer — regardless of your health. No medical underwriting, no exclusions.
After this window closes, carriers can ask health questions and may deny coverage or charge more. That's why acting during your open enrollment period is critical.
If you're already past 65, don't worry — options may still be available depending on your situation. I'll help you understand what's possible.
